Why You Might Be Overpaying for Car Insurance

Everyone must pay for their car insurance. However, no one should have to overpay. All drivers are likely to pay varying amounts for their policy. However, what’s affordable for one driver might not be right for you. Don’t forget to ask your agent about the potential to save with every policy. a car driving down a street next to a tree

Mistakes that Lead to Expensive Car Insurance

Factors like your car’s value, where you live and the amount of coverage you buy will influence your car insurance premium. However, there are many ways to save on your policy, too. Ask yourself a few questions to determine if you are really paying the best price from your coverage:

  • Have you gotten all discounts?

Car insurance carriers frequently offer premium discounts for their best customers. Some of those that drivers can access include discounts for setting up auto-pay or automatic policy renewals. Others can apply if you have a vehicle security system or are a full-time student. You can even save if you complete a driver safety course or remain loyal to the same insurer year over year.

  • What’s your deductible?

Many policies include deductibles. When your car sustains damage, your insurer will appraise the cost of the repairs. To finalize your settlement, they will subtract the deductible from the repair cost. The deductible is your responsibility to pay towards the repairs.

If you choose a low deductible, then you shift more of a cost burden away from yourself and onto the insurer. Therefore, this might increase your premium. Choosing a higher deductible might likewise help you save. However, don't choose one so high that you cannot afford to pay it.

  • You haven’t reported your mileage correctly.

One factor that your insurer might use to calculate premiums is how much you drive. They might ask you to show how much you have driven since you last renewed your coverage. If you overestimate, this might cost you more. Instead, base this estimate on your odometer reading. If you cut back on driving, then tell your insurer, too. This can help you save.

  • You missed bundling opportunities.

Often, you qualify for bundling discounts if you buy multiple policies from the same insurance company. By bundling auto coverage with renters, homeowners, motorcycle or other policies, you’ll find it a lot more convenient to manage your insurance portfolio.

Your Insurer Can Help You Compare Policies

Based on your risk ratings, some insurance companies will offer more affordable coverage. Therefore, ask your agent if they can help you compare policies among carriers. That way, you can see what your rate will be on similar coverage from different insurers.
